„Breathless. I’m sure it’s chosen a lot in this closet. The reason I’m choosing it is because there’s a section in this film that makes me a little homesick. Jean Seberg is from my hometown of Marshalltown, Iowa. So when she says “New York Herald Tribune” in this film, I think one of the few English lines in it, she says it with that very flat Midwest accent that I recognize because we’re from the same town.”
„Alain Delon, one of the coolest guys ever on film. This is probably the one I’ve seen most recently at the Aero Theatre in Santa Monica, who run it every few years. Took my 15-year-old son to see it, and I’m happy to report that he enjoyed it as well. You’re never sure about that when you’re showing your kids something that you love, but incredible film. If you don’t know it, worth checking out. And huge influence, I think, on any director that’s making, you know, a thriller.”

„Here’s the thing: Barry Lyndon has rightly had a critical reevaluation in the last decades, a lot of prominent directors have cited it as their favorite Stanley Kubrick, and for a modern audience that really has a modern sense of irony, this movie has aged so well. I feel like watch Succession and then watch Barry Lyndon, because they’re both pieces about, again, an oppressive system, in this case, the aristocracy and the super rich, and the rot in those systems. So, it is as gorgeous as everyone says, but it’s also loads of fun. It’s actually so fun that, even though I recently watched Barry Lyndon, like in the last six months, I think I could do Barry Lyndon again.”

„So says we’re dealing with me and the Wu-Tang Clan vibe. All my Asian cinema is something that I’m crazy about, and it’s probably quite obvious that I’m an Asian cinema fan. And I’m looking over here, sticking out like a like a beautiful flower or a beautiful lotus on a pond is Tsui Hark’s collection, Once Upon a Time in China. Now, this was like the revolutionary vibe of 1990s martial-arts films when Jet Li exploded on the scene, first in Martial Arts of Shaolin. Once he drew into his mature years, Tsui Hark went and got him and they did three of these movies. And I’m telling you, it was the the elevation of martial-arts films. Wo-ping, of course, and his wire work. He went on from doing these to doing Mátrix (1999). We don’t get The Matrix if we don’t get this. So this is a must-watch. Also the cultural relevance of Wong Fei Hung and what he meant to the Opium Wars, etc., etc.”

„Lacombe, Lucien, one of the great films by the great Louis Malle, about a young man who wants to join the Resistance against the Nazis. But when the Resistance doesn’t take him, he decides to become a Nazi. And, I mean, Nazis are back in the mainstream. So, yeah, it’s worth a watch.”

We were working on it, and we didn’t have an ending. And I saw this film, and I stole, frame by frame, the last shot of this film for the last shot of Trainspotting. And if you happen to watch this movie, which is available on Criterion and is available on an extraordinary, proper regrade of this, you’ll see the last shot of this film as it was intended to do, as it reflected the last shot of this film. „I wanted to pick a David Lynch as a tribute to David, who we sadly lost recently. I got to meet him at the Paramount 100th anniversary photograph. And he was so sweet and so nice and so normal, so not the guy that you thought would come up with stuff like Blue Velvet, which is an insanely disturbing movie. I showed this to my daughter the other day and she hated it. But she hated it for exactly the reasons that David Lynch wanted you to hate it. This really, really, unnerving exploration of Middle America, the seedy underworld that exists just under the surface. What I love about Lynch is that he just leaves so much to you. He throws stuff out there, which is kind of indecipherable, but it’s your job to decipher it, it’s your job to apply your interpretations to what he’s saying. And they’re always there. And…I was delighted that Tilly hated it because she talked about it nonstop that night and then the next day. And I said, “Sometimes entertainment is an overrated function of art. Sometimes being made uncomfortable is the point. Sometimes being repulsed by something is the point. And I think David Lynch knew that better than most. So I’m putting Blue Velvet in my bag.”
