Érdekes és egy némileg lassú kamaradráma, a vihartól elzárva egy kis hotelben ragadt társaság csatája bontakozik ki. Azért csata, mert a Humphrey Bogart által játszott világháborús veterán, a hotel tulajdonosa és annak lánya mellett vívja eszmecseréjét egy gengszterbandával. Szóba jön korrupció, rasszizmus, gyilkosság és sok egyéb téma. Bogienak nem ez élete alakítása, ahogyan Bacallnak sem és biztosan nem ez a legjobb filmjük együtt. A maffiavezért alakító Robinson viszont tündökölt ebben a nem éppen hálás szerepben és ő volt a legerősebb pontja a filmnek. Nem egy hagyományos gengszterfilm, pont ez teszi különlegessé és egyszer érdemes a megtekintésre.
